AI can be a powerful brainstorming partner for fiction writers without replacing your creative voice. These prompts generate raw material and frameworks you can shape into something original.
1. Worldbuilding Foundation
Best: ClaudeBuild a setting for a [genre] story. Start with: the core "what if" premise, 3 rules that make this world different from ours, how ordinary people live day-to-day, one major tension or conflict in this society, and a sensory detail for each of the five senses in this world. Avoid anything that's been done in [reference popular works to avoid].
Specify which tropes to avoid. Claude is good at internally consistent worldbuilding.
2. Scene Pacing Doctor
Best: ClaudeThis scene feels [too slow/too fast/uneven]. Text: [paste scene]. Diagnose the pacing problem: identify which paragraphs drag or rush, explain the rhythm issue, and rewrite the scene with better pacing. Maintain my style and all plot points. Show the before/after with annotations explaining changes.
Include what should be the emotional peak of the scene so Claude can pace toward it.
3. Plot Structure Framework
Best: ChatGPTI have a [genre] story idea: [brief premise]. Map it onto a 3-act structure with: the inciting incident that forces action, the midpoint reversal, the "all is lost" moment, and the climax. For each beat, suggest a scene and explain how it raises stakes. Also identify the protagonist's internal arc.
Describe your protagonist's flaw or desire. ChatGPT maps structures well when given clear character motivation.
4. Sensory Detail Enricher
Best: ClaudeRewrite this passage with richer sensory detail: [paste passage]. Add: one unexpected visual, a specific sound, a physical sensation, and a smell or taste. Weave them naturally into the action - don't just list sensory descriptions. The mood should be [describe mood]. Show, don't tell.
Specify the mood so sensory details support the emotional tone. Claude integrates details without purple prose.
5. Conflict Escalation Chain
Best: ClaudeMy protagonist wants [goal] but faces [obstacle]. Create a 5-step escalation chain where each attempt to solve the problem creates a bigger problem. Each step: what the character tries, why it partially works, what new complication it creates, and how the stakes increase. The final complication should force them to change.
Great fiction comes from escalating consequences. Specify what the character refuses to do - that's where the climax lives.
