Creative Writing AI Prompts
AI works best for creative writing when you give it constraints and specifics, not open-ended requests. These prompts produce original, surprising output rather than generic prose.
1. Character Builder from Contradiction
Best: ClaudeCreate a character who is [trait A] but also [contradictory trait B]. Give me: their backstory that explains why both traits coexist, a defining moment that shaped them, how they speak (with 3 sample dialogue lines), their secret fear, and the lie they tell themselves. Setting: [genre/world].
The contradiction is key - it creates depth. Example: "generous but deeply controlling." Claude handles psychological nuance well.
2. Scene with Subtext
Best: ClaudeWrite a scene where [character A] and [character B] are discussing [surface topic] but the scene is really about [underlying tension]. The subtext should be conveyed through word choice, pauses, and what's NOT said. Setting: [location]. Length: [word count]. Neither character directly addresses the real issue.
Subtext is where great fiction lives. Specify the emotional stakes clearly for both characters.
3. Plot Twist Generator
Best: ChatGPTMy story setup: [describe premise and what the reader currently believes]. Generate 5 plot twists that: recontextualize earlier events, feel surprising but inevitable in hindsight, aren't cliche for the [genre] genre, and raise the emotional stakes. Rank them from "clever" to "devastating."
Give ChatGPT enough story context to avoid generic twists. Mention which twists you've already rejected.
4. Opening Paragraph Hook
Best: ClaudeWrite 5 different opening paragraphs for a [genre] story about [brief premise]. Each should use a different hook technique: 1) start in the middle of action, 2) provocative statement, 3) mystery/question, 4) vivid sensory detail, 5) voice-driven character intro. Maximum 4 sentences each.
Specify the tone you're going for. Ask Claude to explain why each hook works differently.
5. Dialogue Punch-Up
Best: ClaudeRewrite this dialogue to make it sharper and more revealing of character. Current dialogue: [paste]. Each character should have a distinct voice pattern, subtext should replace on-the-nose statements, and cut anything that doesn't serve character or plot. The characters are: [brief descriptions].
Include character descriptions so the dialogue reflects their personalities. Claude is strong at voice differentiation.
