AI Summarization Prompts
Good summarization is not about making text shorter. It is about extracting what matters for your specific purpose. These prompts produce summaries tailored to how you will use the information.
1. Executive Summary
Best: ClaudeSummarize this [document/article/report] into an executive summary: [paste text]. Structure: 1) One-sentence bottom line, 2) Key findings (3-5 bullet points), 3) Critical data points, 4) Implications for [your context], 5) Recommended actions. Write for a busy executive who will spend 60 seconds reading this.
Specify who the audience is and what decisions they're making. Claude prioritizes actionable information.
2. Research Paper Breakdown
Best: ClaudeBreak down this research paper: [paste abstract + key sections, or full paper]. Extract: the research question, methodology (and whether it's sound), key findings with effect sizes, limitations the authors acknowledge, limitations they DON'T acknowledge, and practical implications. Rate confidence in findings (1-10) and explain why.
Paste the full paper if possible. Claude's large context window handles academic papers well.
3. Book Summary with Takeaways
Best: ChatGPTSummarize the book [title] by [author]. Include: the core thesis in 1-2 sentences, the 5 most important ideas (not just chapter summaries), what's genuinely novel vs. rehashed conventional wisdom, the strongest and weakest arguments, and 3 actionable takeaways I can apply immediately. Be critical, not just descriptive.
ChatGPT has broad knowledge of popular books. Ask for comparisons to related books for deeper understanding.
4. Multi-Source Synthesis
Best: ClaudeI've gathered information from multiple sources about [topic]: [paste or describe sources]. Synthesize into one coherent summary: where sources agree, where they conflict (and who's more credible), what the overall picture is, and what questions remain unanswered. Don't just summarize each source separately.
Include the source type and credibility for each (peer-reviewed, blog post, news). Claude weighs sources appropriately.
5. Meeting Recording Summary
Best: ClaudeSummarize this meeting transcript: [paste transcript]. Extract: decisions made (with who is responsible), action items with owners and deadlines, open questions that weren't resolved, key disagreements and their status, and topics that need follow-up. Format as a shareable meeting notes document.
Include speaker names if available. Claude distinguishes between discussion, decisions, and action items.
