Goal Setting Prompts
Goals without plans are wishes. These prompts help you set meaningful goals and create systems to actually achieve them.
1. SMART Goal Refinement
Best: ClaudeTurn this vague goal into a SMART goal: "[your goal]". Make it Specific (what exactly?), Measurable (how will I know?), Achievable (is it realistic?), Relevant (why does it matter?), and Time-bound (by when?). Then break it into milestones.
Vague goals can't be achieved because you can't know when you're done.
2. Goal Decomposition
Best: ClaudeBreak this goal into actionable sub-goals: [your goal]. For each sub-goal, define: what success looks like, key activities required, estimated time needed, dependencies, and how to measure progress.
Big goals are achieved through small, consistent actions. Plan the actions.
3. Obstacle Anticipation
Best: ClaudeHelp me anticipate obstacles for this goal: [your goal]. For each likely obstacle: describe it, explain why it might happen, create a prevention strategy, and prepare a response if it does happen. Make me resilient.
Planning for obstacles isn't pessimism—it's preparedness.
4. Accountability System
Best: ClaudeDesign an accountability system for this goal: [your goal]. Include: check-in frequency, metrics to track, how to celebrate progress, consequences for missing commitments, and who to involve as an accountability partner.
Systems beat willpower. Design your environment for success.
5. Goal Alignment Check
Best: ClaudeHelp me check if this goal aligns with my bigger picture. My goal: [goal]. My values: [list]. My other commitments: [list]. Does this goal support what matters most? Is now the right time? What would I need to say no to?
The right goal at the wrong time is still wrong. Consider opportunity cost.
6. Weekly Goal Review
Best: ClaudeHelp me review my progress on [goal]. This week I planned: [planned]. This week I did: [actual]. What's working, what's not, and what should I adjust? Help me stay on track without being too hard on myself.
Regular reviews catch problems early. Adjust the plan, not the destination.
