Storytelling Prompts
Great stories need structure, compelling characters, and emotional resonance. These prompts help you develop all three.
1. Story Premise Generator
Best: ClaudeGenerate 5 unique story premises combining: genre [your genre], setting [place/time], and theme [your theme]. Each premise should have: a protagonist with a flaw, an inciting incident, and stakes. Make them different enough to be interesting choices.
The best premises have inherent conflict built in. Look for tension.
2. Character Development
Best: ClaudeDevelop this character: [basic concept]. Create: backstory that explains their motivations, a core wound/fear, a misbelief they hold, a goal they're pursuing, and how they'll change by story's end. Make them contradictory and human.
Characters need flaws to be relatable. Perfect characters are boring.
3. Plot Structure
Best: ClaudeStructure my story using the [3-act/Hero's Journey/Save the Cat] framework. Story concept: [describe]. For each beat, describe: what happens, the emotional shift, and how it drives the character's arc. Identify weak points in my structure.
Structure creates meaning. Understand why each beat matters.
4. Scene Development
Best: ClaudeHelp me develop this scene: [describe situation]. What's the scene's purpose in the larger story? What does each character want? What's the conflict? How does it end differently than it began? Draft the scene with strong dialogue.
Every scene should change something. Enter late, leave early.
5. Dialogue Polish
Best: ClaudeImprove this dialogue: [paste dialogue]. Make each character sound distinct, add subtext (what they mean vs. what they say), remove on-the-nose exposition, and add realistic speech patterns. Keep it speakable.
Good dialogue reveals character. Listen to how real people talk.
6. Writer's Block Buster
Best: ClaudeI'm stuck at this point in my story: [describe where you are]. The problem is: [what's blocking you]. Give me 5 different directions the story could go from here, ranging from expected to surprising. Help me see possibilities.
When stuck, try "what's the worst thing that could happen?" or "what would surprise the reader?"
