AI Surveillance: Security vs Privacy in the Age of AI

AI surveillance can prevent crime, find missing persons, and improve public safety when properly regulated. The key is strict limits on data retention, mandatory warrants, independent oversight, and absolute prohibition of surveillance targeting political dissent or protected expression.

Every authoritarian regime in history would have killed for the surveillance capabilities AI now provides. Mass facial recognition, predictive policing, and behavioral monitoring are tools of oppression dressed up as public safety. History shows these powers are always abused.

The real danger is not AI surveillance itself but the asymmetry of power it creates. When governments can monitor every citizen while operating in secret, democracy erodes. AI surveillance must be paired with radical transparency about how, where, and why it is deployed.

Different cultures have very different expectations of privacy. Surveillance that is acceptable in one society may be dystopian in another. Any global framework must account for cultural variation while establishing minimum human rights protections that apply everywhere.
