AI Sentience: Can AI Become Conscious?

We don't have a scientific theory of consciousness that can definitively determine whether any system is sentient. Current AI systems process information but likely don't have subjective experience. However, as systems grow more complex, we need ethical frameworks ready before the question becomes urgent.

Current AI systems, including large language models, are sophisticated pattern matchers without inner experience. They simulate understanding without actually understanding. True consciousness likely requires something beyond information processing that we don't yet understand about biology.

Whether AI can become conscious depends on whether consciousness is substrate-independent — can it exist outside biology? If consciousness is purely computational, then sufficiently advanced AI could be conscious. If it requires biological processes, it cannot. We don't know which is true.

The question of AI sentience is currently unanswerable because we lack a rigorous definition of consciousness itself. Before asking if AI is conscious, we need to solve the hard problem of consciousness. Until then, we should err on the side of caution as AI systems grow more capable.
